Starting A Taxi Company : A Short Guide
Whether you’re a taxi driver looking to branch out on your own or want to drastically change your career path, starting a taxi business can be a fruitful enterprise. Now and then everyone needs a personal driver, especially if you live in an urban location. If you want to start your business the correct way, consider the following steps to ensure that your business is successful from the very beginning.
Start Small – The key to any business is to start small, but this is especially true for a taxi company. You can easily invest too much into methods or services you do not need, such as useless advertisement. Instead, slowly establish a client base. Once you have a reputation, you can then make solid plans to expand or possibly purchase more vehicles.
Keep It Universal – Since much of your advertisement will be in the form of potential clients spotting your taxi as you travel along your route, it’s very important that you display yourself in the most obvious sense. This is not a business where it pays to get creative or unique with your taxi cab design – stick with the universal signals that you are a taxi service. The iconic “CAB” light on the roof is a good start, and also stick with the common colors of cabs, such as bright yellow or white.
Choose the Right Vehicle(s) – The comfort of your clients should be paramount as this will decide if they become repeat customers or if they will recommend you to acquaintances. A small taxi with limited trunk space is not going to make for an enjoyable car ride, so it would be best to pick a full-size sedan with plenty of room in the back. Depending on your location, it may also be wise to select a vehicle that has four or front-wheel drive for inclement weather, and also outfit the interior to protect both you and your clients (privacy windows, rear air conditioners, etc). These simple precautionary steps will help you to not only attract clients, but turn them into repeat customers.
Do Your Research – Usually, you can’t just outfit your personal car with “taxi” signs and start transporting people professionally. There are local and state laws that require you to perform specific safety inspections, register your business, and so forth – otherwise you could be operating an illegal business. In order to start your taxi business off on the right foot, contact the local Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) and inquire about specific taxi regulations. If not, they can refer you to the state department who can provide you with the correct information.
While you can have the most attractive taxi in town and charge the most reasonable prices, your business will undoubtedly suffer without proper planning and record-keeping. A good product or service is only half the equation in running a successful business – you need to know the logistics of being an entrepreneur. With that in mind, a few books on starting a business will certainly help, or if you’re really serious, take a local business start-up class. If you know the principles of how to successfully run your business, you can easily avoid many unnecessary headaches in the future.
